Social Bookmarking Sites – How They Can Help the Webmaster

Alan Mater asked:

Social bookmarking is quickly becoming one of the many popular aspects of what we know as web 2.0. It is becoming a very effective way for web surfers to find the latest information and news on any subject they want. Social bookmarking sites use viral marketing and popular opinion and have the ability to discover what is important before any search engine bot can spider the site and rank it among the thousands of sites out there on the internet. It is becoming a crucial part of any business’ online presence and is a source of traffic for your site that should not be ignored.

Social bookmarking is a powerful tool in promoting a website and may just be the best way to boost the traffic to your site. Webmasters now have the ability to display a variety of bookmarking buttons on their web pages and the surfer can then easily bookmark the site or specific page. One little click on the relevant button that is being displayed, the surfer will be taken to their favorite bookmarking account. Multiple social bookmarking sites are combined on one page into one button to make it easier for the surfer and no work is required by the webmaster.

Optimizing your web pages for Google and all the other major search engines is not enough anymore. The only way to be successful at online marketing is to include the online community as part of your marketing efforts and to not ignore the effectiveness of web 2.0. Social bookmarking can help you get your sites out there on 47 of the best social bookmarking sites in under 15 minutes. The more people that bookmark your site, the more organic traffic you will get, as well as backlinks which will give it authority in Google. Now keep in mind that social bookmarking alone will not give you a top search engine ranking, but it will definitely not hurt your marketing efforts.

If you are going to try to reach the social bookmarking audience, then make sure you include Digg on your pages because the audience is so large. Digg is a high power authority and a listing will rank highly on Google and other search engines for certain terms. Searches is loved by Google, Yahoo and the other major search engines. StartAid bookmark pages rank highly in Google and other search engines as well. Listing your sites in Furl will lead to traffic from organic rankings and its popular page drives traffic. Best of all, StumbleUpon can send major traffic with its user base of around 3 million and currently brings in more traffic than any other social bookmarking site. A great place to find a button to add all of these services to your site is www.addthis.com and is free.

Free exposure is always going to be the best alternative for the webmaster, and social bookmarking services like these as well as other web 2.0 sites are great ways to get a lot of free exposure and traffic. This isn’t only good for building backlinks, but people search on bookmark sites to find information as well. Do not ignore the major bookmarking sites, or you are ignoring some of your potential subscribers or customers.

If one of your main concerns is getting repeat traffic, then you must make it easy for your visitors to add your web pages or site to their social bookmarking services. Word-of-mouth advertising is often underestimated and overlooked, but this can drive a lot of traffic to your content and create buzz. Web 2.0 sites like bookmarking services get millions of hits a day, so it would be wise for you to start utilizing them on your site to increase both real traffic and get long term incoming links.

Social Bookmarking – What it is and How to Use It

Eliyahu Shear asked:

So, you’ve finally got something on the web that you believe to be the next best thing! It could be an article you recently wrote and published on one of the web’s article database sites, or it could be a posting you made on your blog. It may even be one of your latest web pages linked to your main web page. It could even be a page of your photography – or a page of your online shop where users can see more about what you have to sell – and of course buy from you directly!

Did you know that there must be some 15 BILLION web pages available at the moment? Just imagine this now. Let’s say there are 6 billion people in the world… and each of them is looking for something in particular. Well let’s do some wild guessing now. Imagine that you’ve just developed the latest widget gadget! This gadget is the world’s greatest bread preserver. In addition to being able to preserve bread for months on end without the slightest trace of mould or becoming dry and hard – this unique machine doubles up as a refrigerator – because it needs to be cool to keep the bread fresh. It also doubles up as an oven – so that you can just turn up the heat quickly when you need to warm the bread (always tastes better this way!) It has some other unique abilities, such as being able to fold open so that you can place a number of loaves of bread (of various kinds) inside it. In fact, it has a special shelf that also allows for the actual baking of bread to take place. It’s really a superb device. As I said – the latest widget gadget available. This device could make you millions and you could find yourself on the next “World’s top 100 Billionaire” list. Fantastic!

Anyway back to reality. So you’ve got the goods sitting in your home all ready for production. You’ve got the web page designed artistically so that any deficiencies in the product will be more than made up by the splendid graphics you’ve chosen to make your page a big winner. And you’ve uploaded a beautiful picture of your widgetmagoo. Now there you have it – your page is out there with Paypal button on and all. It’s sitting… and sitting…. You can’t seem to work out why nobody knows about your product though. It’s there – isn’t it?! It’s on the big Internet!

Hm… let’s get the picture clearer now. So, you’ve got a bread maker haven’t you? And yours is the best – isn’t it? What with the built it oven, fridge, and radio/cell phone too. And there are really only 15 BILLION pages of Internet out there. What with 6 billion people – I’m sure that at least every third person should get to your page… Eventually!

Of course the truth is, if you’ve done a recent search on Google for “bread maker” (for lack of a better word to describe our widgetmagoo) you’ll get over 1 million results. Now, your superb page is sitting there somewhere of course. But maybe… just maybe it’s number… 1 million! Considering that the average person would have to click on the “next page” button some 100 000 times (10 pages are shown on every page) – I guess it would take the average person a few years before he gets to your page, and by that time, he’d be too exhausted to think of new widgetmagoos.

Of course if someone did a search for “widgetmagoo” they’d probably see your listing in the number 1 position. But I just don’t know how many people know about widgetmagoos. So, it’s going to be kind of difficult to make sure people get to know about your product – whether it’s called a “widgetmagoo”, a “widgetmagee”, or even just a plan old fashioned “bread maker” or “bread freshener.”

But we’ve got the goods, and we know that once people see them, they’re going to buy these little gold nuggets in no time at all – just as soon as they see them!!!

Welcome SOCIAL BOOKMARKING!

Social bookmarking is a way to get others to know about your famous page in a zillionth of the time it would take for them to know about it – without the bookmarking! In fact, you have two advantages with social bookmarking. One is that by doing this, anybody else who uses these bookmarking tools will have faster access to your page – if they’re serious about finding the latest greatest things on the Internet. And second of all, when one social bookmarks, one’s own page automatically gets a higher list ranking with Google. Google tends to think that if someone out there (no matter who it is – whether the author himself or another person) – bookmarked a page – it really must have some value. In fact, you might find your page suddenly jumping to position 20 from position 1 million in just a couple of days! And if it’s really something special, and people do start clicking on it… well, you may get good ol’ position number ONE! And that’s really what the web is all about. You want everyone doing a search for “bread maker” or “bread freshener” or the like, to end up seeing your page at the number one post so that they’ll all click on it and buy YOUR product! Whoopee!

So, now for the practical. How do you bookmark your site, your photographs – whatever:

You’re going to take a trip to the social bookmarking site. There you will be able to get your site listed in some 160 places in 5 minutes flat!

Just one word of warning before we begin. Do be careful not to get too carried away with only your pages – and doing all 160 bookmarks every single time. Google has it’s ways of seeing what you’re up to… So if you start abusing the system which is made to actually help people and not to simply spam everyone with your goodies – you may find yourself in trouble. This won’t do much good to the terrific widgetmagoo you have recently invented, so do things cautiously.

Let’s go now:

Take a trip to socialmarker.com/ – because this is the site that will make things easy for you.

You’ll actually see a button on the page under the “how to use it (help)” section. If you drag this button to your main browser toolbar, you will automatically set everything up for future use. It will make life easier from now on, because you will now have a button on your toolbar that will allow you to bookmark any page by simply clicking on that button – instead of having to log in every single time to the main site. So do add it.

Once you’ve added it, you’re ready to begin!

1. Go to the site you’d like to bookmark so that others will know what you’re up to.
2. Click on the social bookmark button on your browser (the one you just set up)
3. Fill in the information about the site that does not already appear in the boxes.
4. You’ll need a title for your post (such as Widgetmagoo Miracle.)
5. You’ll need the link (it should be filled in, because you’re already on the page.)
6. You’ll need some text – something like – “This tool will keep your bread fresh for years on end! A must for anyone who ever eats bread!)
7. Then some tags (bread,maker,fresh,widgetmagoo,oven,fridge,bake,cellphone)
8. Check (place a tick) in the social bookmark engines that you want to list your page on. Choose them all, or just a few. Some work better. I’d recommend Propellor, Digg, Twitter, Reddit, MrJeeves.ask.com. Though you can really choose whichever you want. There is no reason not to use the others at all. Experiment and have fun.
9. DONE!

Now what you’ll need to do is to actually make your submissions to each of these sites. Most of the information will appear on the bottom of your page so that you can simply drag and drop your info into the required blocks without having to re-type the pieces of text you entered about the site on the front page. Each page will tell you as you go along how they work.

You’ll have to register with each of them (which is a bit time consuming for 160 sites!) But once you’re registered, you’ll simply log in, submit the info, and everything is done!

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be listed on these utilities. They work in incredible ways, and before long, you will actually see people coming to your site from having found you on one of these bookmarks. It is actually quite remarkable how it all works. I am surprised every day when I see how many people find their way to my sites from these bookmarks.

I’d suggest getting stuck into them immediately, as you only stand to gain as hundreds and thousands of new people get to find out more about you faster than ever!

Does Social Networking Or Bookmarking Really Work?

Mikhail Tuknov asked:

The bookmarks on your social networking site are stored and tagged by you using key words. Users who are also interested in the same topics can access your site and your bookmarks by running a search for those same key words.

In social networking, key words really are “key”. It is by searching for these words or “tags” that you can find web pages on topics that you are interested in. This is also how other people can find you and your web pages.

This is why social networking gets its name, because by searching for web sites through social networking users not only find web sites that cater to their interests but people as well. You can get to know other users by getting to know what they are interested in.

The biggest advantage in the use of a social networking site is the human factor inherent to the operations of the site. Because it is humans who are scanning the WebPages and classifying them by the key words, you can be sure that they understand the content of the resources they are making available to searchers.

However, this human factor also has certain disadvantages. For one thing, there is no standard set of key words or a standard structure to tags. This means that one bookmarked page might have several tags or key word might lead to it. There is also the chance of miss tagging due to something as simple as a miss spelled word.

Since the tags and keywords are assigned by individuals, there is also the danger of a webpage having unclear tags as the person who tagged the page might have a different perspective on the topic as the searcher. You can miss out on a resource that could have helped you because of tags that are to “personal” or unorthodox.

Because social networking can be used as a tool to increase website traffic, some unscrupulous individuals may take advantage of the tag system to make their sites more visible. They can attach “popular” tags to their page and even bookmark their page multiple times using a lot of different tags that may have nothing to do with the actual content of their web page.

The first social networking sites cropped up in 1996 with the first site called itlist.com. During the dot-com bubble burst in 1999, most of the already developed social networking sites disappeared.
Social networking was revived in 2004 with the founding of such sites as del.icious, Simpy and Furl. These three remain some of the most well known and largest social networking sites in the web with Yahoo and Google developing their own versions.

Social Bookmarking – Is it Business Worthy?

Michael V Lawrence asked:

Social bookmarking sites are sites in which you can apply for a free membership and share web pages, articles and posts with other members. When joining, you are usually allowed to create a profile for yourself in which you can include a bio and links to your own site(s). If you created content or read something that you feel others would benefit from, you mark the site through your social bookmarking site for others to read. You can also browse content saved by other members.

As a blog owner, I immediately joined the top social bookmarking sites. I not only marked my own posts and sites but also others I felt that are providing quality content. I would routinely browse through the latest marks by other members and see what type of content they are saving.

I immediately began to see huge spikes in the traffic to my blog(s). At times, I would often see my first visitor before I was able to switch back to the window I was viewing prior to bookmarking my post. I would check my analytics and see a huge rush of visitors. I was really excited. I began to play around with the titles of my posts in an effort to gain more visitors. I found that if I titled a post like a news story the traffic was very high. I continued to do this for weeks.

I thought that this was great until I dug deeper into my analytics. When I looked deeper, I found extremely high bounce rates. Bounce rates are the percentage of people who exit on the page they landed on (meaning they read what I bookmarked, if that, and did not browse the rest of the content on my blog). I started to look at the referrers and the bounce rates and I found that 85-90% of the visitors from these sites bounced immediately, not good for someone trying to build a blog readership. I began to ask around in forums and found that many agreed with my findings because they experienced it themselves.

This is not to say that social bookmarking does not have its advantages because it does. You can drive hundreds, if not thousands of visitors to your blog, article or site. Maybe you will get some returning visitors or even a subscriber or two. Over time this can add up for you. If you expecting a great amount of “quality” traffic social bookmarking isn’t the answer. However I do not suggest ignoring these options for building some long-term subscribers or returning visitors.

Social Bookmarking, Pinging, Social Networking – Which One is the Best to Promote Your Site?

Jason Callens asked:

You have probably heard of pinging services. You may also have heard of social networking sites such as twitter or Facebook. You may also aware of the fact that these services or sites can improve the traffic to your website. Perhaps, you may even notice that these sites can be used to improve your business sales. Seriously, have you ever thought of using social bookmarking to further boost your business sales? Do want to know the biggest secret to promote a website successfully?

First of all, I have to congratulate you for landing yourself at the right article here. In this no-nonsense article, I will show you how to utilize all these pinging services, social networking sites and social bookmarking services to increase your business sales. Do not worry about the process; it is actually as easy as learning how to spell ABC. Before that, we have to look into a couple of things.

Pinging service is really great if you happened to have a blog. Blog such as WordPress will enable you to ping your post automatically. However, this may not garner you many visitors or attentions, as there are constant pings that are going around every time you ping. This will ultimately push your ping quickly to the bottom of the main page, thus lowering your probability of having your ping noticed by others. Another downside of that, you have absolutely no control over what the title or description of the ping, even if you do have a killer title, it will automatically shorten to an unattractive extend by the pinging sites.

In social networking, you may know it may only gains some attentions as not everyone who are interested will be at your friend lists. For instance, in twitter you may only tweet to your follower list, to get wider attention, you have to manually add more followers from twitter. This alone can takes up hours to do so. Plus, you have to retweet your tweets in order to gain more attentions. This same goes to the social network site such as Facebook, where you have to add more friends to gain more attentions from the target audiences.

As for social bookmarking, the best thing is that, you can always re-bookmark your site or an article with different titles and description. By doing so, you will figure out the best title that can gain the most attention and visitor to your site, which ultimately convert all the traffic to sales. Another good thing about social bookmarking is that, you do not have to add friends or find followers to gain more attentions. This alone allows you to focus on optimizing the description and title of your bookmarks.

Now, the million dollar question: How to get the most out of these services?

Assuming that you have a blog, you can easily find blog plug-in that enables you to have your ping customized according to your liking. You may specify the custom title which could be different from your post title, and have them ping accordingly. Then, you can subsequently submit your blog post to article directories such as: Goarticles.com. Goarticles.com gives you instant approval, where you can those links posted onto your social networking sites. These alone, already multiple the links that you can spread on the internet and your article will probably get indexed faster than your blog post because article directories are search engine crawlers’ favorites.

Then, you bookmark all the links to your article and blog post. With social bookmarking, you have a wider spread of your content to the potential customers over the internet. Furthermore, this can give you more link juice or link popularity as most of the social bookmarking sites have high page rank and are DO FOLLOWS! The best part is that you can have your articles or blog post bookmarked as frequently as you wish. In the long-run, it will not only give you better search engine ranking position, you will be blasted with huge amount of targeted traffic.

The downside of social bookmarking is that, it requires you to submit your bookmarks to multiple social bookmarking sites to be effective. It is really torturous to have your bookmarks submitted to multiple sites, as every internet marketer wants to capture as many potential customers as possible. I mean, you may have realized it yourself; you have to repeat the process of registration, e-mail activation and bookmark submission for every social bookmarking site. Just by thinking of it alone, you will probably scrap the idea of social bookmarking for your sites or articles.

Now, just imagine you can have a social bookmarking tool to automate all your bookmark submission process. You just have to click a button that can automate the whole process from registration to bookmark submission for multiple sites. Within minutes, the whole process will be completed. You may want to check the bookmark statistics after 24 hours and tweak your titles or tags or descriptions of the bookmarks and repeat the whole process again. With just that, you will most likely increase your traffic at least more than 200%, as you can now place more of your focus in optimizing your bookmarks or optimizing other factors of your site that can bring in more sales.

I am pretty sure you already got hold of the concept of social bookmarking. By having such knowledge, it would be a waste if you do not put them into action. You should get yourself a social bookmarking tool today. However, do aware that most of social bookmarking tools available in the market do not automate the registration and e-mail activation process. If you are serious about getting yourself a good social bookmarking tool, you should check out BookmarkWiz. This tool is great because it is born out of the frustration of a group of internet marketers who are frustrated with all the existing bookmarking tools. It is basically internet marketers created for internet marketers.
